Minc was born out of a problem. When Malmö's shipyards and factories shut down, the city needed new companies and new jobs, and Minc was built to help create them. Solving problems for the city is in our DNA.
Today the problems look different. Building materials ending up as waste. Care staff struggling with language hurdles on the job. Junior workers facing displacement as AI changes entry-level work. These are complex challenges that market-driven innovation can help solve.
That is what we mean when we say impact means business. Impact startups aren't charity projects. They are companies that solve real problems for people, society and the environment, and grow by doing it. If a solution cannot scale and sell, it will not have much impact. If it can, it changes a lot.
We sit in a unique position. Minc is owned by the City of Malmö, works daily with founders, investors and companies, and sees problems from every side of the table. That puts us in a key role: finding the challenges worth solving, and the people who can solve them.
We also have something most incubators don't have, and that is connections. For many impact startups, the city itself can be a testbed and an early customer. A Minc startup Ecodrop shows what that can look like when an ecosystem comes together to supports ambitious founders. Ecodrops tap device turns water use into live data. Schools have bought it, Malmö housing company MKB is testing it in hundreds of Malmö homes, and other municipalities are interested in the solution. For an impact startup, that kind of access to the real world is often worth more than any pitch deck.
We already work with impact companies. Now we want to do it with more intent, and on a bigger scale.
We start Minc Impact with a series of well-curated events. We bring in experts, the public sector and ecosystem actors to work out what impact really means: for society, for founders, and for Minc. It is not about buzzwords, ESG or CSR box-ticking, but real, scalable solutions with real results. We kicked off with our first event on Thursday, Oct 8 when we brought in officials from the public sector to discuss the topic ‘From Challenge to Innovation: How Do We Solve the City's Issues Together with Startups?’.
Johan Berhin from Plockhugget shares the real founder story of building an impact company in a classic business area. No polished success story, just what it actually takes. Sign up to the event here: Building an impact company
Listen to and participate in a live conversation between Åsa Skogström Feldt from the IKEA Social Entrepreneurship BV and Lars Jannick Johansen from Den Sociale Kapitalfond on what impact means when it has to deliver, for society and for investors. Sign up to the event here: What is Impact, really?
